Facts and History about Frankfurt International Airport

Frankfurt Airport - All Information on Frankfurt Airport (FRA)

Frankfurt Airport (German: Flughafen Frankfurt Main, also known as Rhein-Main-Flughafen) is in Frankfurt, Germany. It is one of Germany's most populated cities and a leading financial hub.

Frankfurt Airport lies 12 kilometers southwest of central Frankfurt, near the Autobahn intersection Frankfurter Kreuz, where two of the most heavily used motorways in Europe (A3 and A5) meet.

The southern portion of the airport grounds extends partially into the cities of Rüsselsheim am Main and Mörfelden-Walldorf, and a western part of the grounds lies in the town of Kelsterbach.

The Airport is in the Frankfurt/Rhine-Main region, Germany's third-largest metropolitan region, located in the densely populated area of the west-central European megalopolis.

Thereby, along with a strong rail and motorway connection, the Airport serves as a significant transport node for the greater region, less than two hours by ground to Cologne, the Ruhr Area, and Stuttgart.

The Airport covers an area of 2,300 hectares of land and features two passenger terminals. It has four runways, two railway stations, car rental centers, and parking facilities.

Frankfurt Airport is considered the busiest Airport by passenger traffic in Germany and one of the most active in Europe.

Over the years, millions of passengers have been to the Airport. It serves hundreds of destinations on several continents.

The southern side of the airport ground was home to the Rhein-Main Air Base, a significant airbase for the United States from 1947 until 2005 when the airbase was closed, and Fraport acquired the property.

Germany is a fascinating country when it comes to aviation, in the sense that its busiest Airport doesn't serve its capital city.

The huge hangars were demolished in 1940 during the conversion of the base to military use.

During World War II, the Luftwaffe used the field sporadically as a fighter base and an experimental jet aircraft station.

After the war, more runways, terminals, and improvements were poured into the facility.

Overall, Frankfurt is a fascinating airport with a diverse operational history.

Its busiest route in Europe includes Berlin, Hamburg, London–Heathrow, Munich, Vienna, Madrid, Lisbon, Istanbul, and Stockholm–Arlanda.

Its busiest intercontinental routes are Dubai–International, Toronto–Pearson, São Paulo–Guarulhos, Washington–Dulles, Chicago–O'Hare, Bangkok–Suvarnabhumi, Doha, Newark, Cairo, and Seoul–Incheon.

The official currency of Germany is the Euro. The currency sign for the Euro is € while the code is EUR.

The US dollars (US$) are not generally accepted, but you can keep a small supply of dollars with you when you go to Germany.

Dollars are good to have on hand in case of an emergency or if you cannot get any local currency.

Amenities at the facility include ample dining choices, shopping, and facilities like restrooms, ATMs, and many more. A currency exchange center is also available at the Airport.

Frankfurt Airport's International Air Transport Association (IATA) code is constantly referred to as FRA throughout this content.

This gateway sits 111 meters above sea level at 50°02′00″N and 008°34′14″E in Frankfurt, Germany.
